Preface

If you opened this book, there is a good chance you are trying to understand something painful, confusing, or unfinished in your life. Pain, confusion, and unfinished work are what gave rise to this book in the first place.

It grew out of loss, therapy, research, counseling work, military service, and more hard lessons than I would have chosen for myself. I hold a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University at Buffalo. I also spent a decade in the military as a Civil Engineer and later worked as a counselor for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Those experiences did not give me easy answers. They did teach me to take suffering, behavior, resilience, and responsibility seriously.

This book is not a one-size-fits-all answer key. It is a research-grounded book for real life. Each chapter includes references for further reading, but the point is not to impress you with citations. The point is to give you something useful: clearer thinking, stronger boundaries, better questions, and steadier footing when life gets messy.

You do not have to read this book straight through. Read it cover to cover if that serves you, or jump to the chapter that meets the season you are in. The topics range from personal growth and painful emotions to relationships, social issues, money, work, and the strange pressures of online life.

I have never been someone who avoids difficult subjects just because they may upset people. At times I have handled those conversations better than at other times, but the commitment has stayed the same. This book takes on hard topics in relationships, personal growth, social behavior, and emotional survival, including narcissism, gaslighting, victim mentality, attachment, grief, boundaries, and the slow work of rebuilding a life with clarity.

If this book helps you understand yourself better, face something you have been avoiding, or move through life with a little more wisdom and courage, then it has done its job.

Let’s begin. Happy reading.
